What is PCI Tokenization?
PCI tokenization substitutes sensitive data like Primary Account Numbers (PANs) with randomly generated tokens. These tokens retain no mathematical relationship to the original data, making them useless to attackers if compromised.
Tokens are categorized by their usage scope:
Single-use tokens are assigned exclusively to individual transactions, while multi-use tokens remain persistently linked to a PAN, enabling consistent tracking across multiple interactions.
Multi-use tokens are commonly utilized in scenarios requiring longitudinal data association, such as recurring subscription payments, customer loyalty programs, and marketing or sales analytics platforms.
How PCI Tokenization Works
Tokens can be reversible or irreversible:

Tokenization vs. Encryption

In fact, the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) treats an encrypted PAN as a clear text PAN in terms of compliance scope because it’s reversible. Therefore, systems storing encrypted PANs are still considered within the scope of PCI DSS compliance because the data remains sensitive and must be protected.
In contrast, because tokenization substitutes the sensitive PAN data with tokens, it removes CHD from your systems and, in turn, reduces your PCI DSS audit scope. While tokenization isn’t a mandated requirement under PCI DSS, its adoption greatly streamlines compliance.

“Tokenization solutions do not eliminate the need to maintain and validate PCI DSS compliance, but they may simplify a merchant’s validation efforts by reducing the number of system components for which PCI DSS requirements apply.
